When the GM is away the boys must play
Matt couldn't make the regular Thursday night game of D&D this week, which left us without a GM. Situations as dire as this call for board games, and this week it was the turn of Settlers of Catan.
If you aren't familiar with the game, the principle is very simple. You start by generating a hex map using tiles, each tile produces a different type of resource. The object is to gain resources, and use them to build settlements (worth 1 point) and cities (worth 2 points). The winner is the first to 10 points. A few other factors add complications.
Its very easy to pick up and Richard and Mark (who hadn't played it before) picked it up within the first round.
Things quickly became vindictive as frequent rolls of a 7 sent the thief hurtling back and forth between a hex producing resources for me, and one producing resources for Alex and Mark -- could this have been a contributing factor to Richard's victory?
As I sat down to write this entry I went a-huntin' for a suitable link to explain what CoS is, among the results thrown up by google was a Java applet version to play online. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but the weekend aproaches...
