Role Call: DIY

James Kosub asks:

Can you summarize two campaign concepts you'd create for player with identical tastes to your own?

I really enjoy the novels of David Eddings, along his later work hasn't impressed me as much as his first three epics. A common theme in his books is the playing of sneaky politics at very high levels with notable examples being the sending of illusionary fleets along the entire length of a coast so the enemy was told of an overwealming force coming their way, and some very interesting manipulation of a voting system. I think that something along these lines would make an interesting campaign, perhaps Birthright would make a good setting for it.

I'm a big fan of mystery stories (novels, films, radio, etc), so my second concept will have have to include some strong mystery elements. A spooky old house, cut off from everywhere by the weather, and a group of travelers who are forced to take shelter. OK, I admit it - it isn't very original, but it isn't something I've had a chance to do before.

I notice that Mongoose are going to produce D20 Steampunk -- I think a pseudo-Victorian setting would fit this type of campaign nicely, and gives me a couple of ideas about extending it...

Typically murder mysteries end once the murderer is revealed, it would be interesting to time things so that the weather calms down shortly before this point. At the moment the villain is revealed the game switches tack, and turns from an investigation in to a chase through the countryside. The murderer makes it to the railway station, opening up the possibility of a duel to the death atop a speeding train!

On a slight tangent, I wonder what it would be like to take part in one of these?

So, in summary:

  1. A Fantasy political campaign involving sneakiness on an epic scale
  2. A Steampunk murder mystery
